In Winnipeg, the Christmas Cheer Board distributes over 16,000 hampers to families in need. These boxes of food and toys help to make the holiday season a little brighter and less stressful for lower-income households.
Each hamper contains a variety of non-perishable food items, perishable items such as a turkey, milk, and eggs, and gifts for children under age 14.
How does Mary, Mother help?
Each year, our parish, led by a team of committed volunteers, puts together and delivers 25+ hampers! Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, we are able to provide the basic requirements of a hamper, plus many extras!
Who gets our hampers?
People apply to the Christmas Cheer Board if they need a hamper, and the Christmas Cheer Board provides us with a list of families. The Christmas Cheer Board is non-denominational and hampers are given out across all cultures and faiths. Once we have the list of families, volunteers help wrap the gifts for the children, and then lovingly assemble the hampers which are delivered a week before Christmas.
What can YOU do?
We are in need of non-perishable food, toys, and monetary donations (used to purchase the perishable food items.)
Please stop by our Christmas Cheer hamper board in the atrium and take a ticket with a food or gift (toy) item. Buy the item and bring it back to the church before December 11.
Monetary donations (cheques payable to Mary Mother of the Church), can be made in the atrium or placed in the collection basket marked “Christmas Hampers”. Please print your name, address and envelope number. New this year, monetary donations can be made on the church website (www.mmoc.ca) by using debit or credit cards. Information regarding the hampers will be available at a table in the atrium before and after each Mass.
The last date we can accept hamper donations is Sunday, December 11. Hamper will be delivered December 17. For inquiries, please call or text Tara Beckta at 204-890-4905.
