At Mary, Mother of the Church, we prepare children starting in Grade 3 for First Penance (Reconciliation). Parents, the primary educators of the faith, are actively involved in the preparation for this Sacrament. Preparation involves parents and children attending three (3) 1 hour sessions.

The following criteria must be met before preparing for the Sacrament of First Penance (Reconciliation):

• Child has been baptized.
• Child is in Grade 3 or turning 9 or older in 2024.
• Child recognizes the difference between right and wrong.
• Child must be enrolled and attending weekly parish catechism classes (unless enrolled in a Catholic School).
• Child has completed a minimum of twenty hours in an ongoing program of catechesis in the previous year (according to Archdiocesan Catechetical Policy).

 

What is involved?

The Sacrament of First Penance preparation program consists of:

1. Three (3) one-hour preparation sessions - Both Child and Parent attends, and three (3) sessions to be completed at home with child.
   • Session attendance is mandatory for children and at least one parent.
2. Monday evenings in February
